most recent studio album, Secret island features 8 original Travis compositions including
slow blues tracks, lyrical shimmering ballads and explosively volatile numbers all
composed with Theo's great ear for melody (Birmingham Post) The album features ex Soft
Machine guitarist extraordinaire John Etheridge. Secret Island was received to
great critical acclaim and is Theo Travis' most popular album to date. The album features
a track called The Crow Road inspired by the Iain Banks novel. Iain Banks himself has said
he is honoured by and particularly likes the composition. Following the release of the
album the Theo Travis Band undertook a 30 date UK tour and in October 1998 his quartet
continued the massive Secret Island tour with 13 dates around the Scottish Highlands and
Islands visiting 5 remote Scottish Islands, including the first ever jazz gig on the tiny
island of Iona. "Well up to scratch..a cracking album" BBC Radio 3 - Impressions "My favourite album of the year" Helen Mayhew Jazz FM "Theo Travis has the kind of tenor sound I thought I'd never hear again, at least not from a contemporary player performing his own material. Imagine a cross between Stan Getz and Wayne Shorter, as they both were in the mid -60' s, and it will give you a rough idea. The sound is warm and rounded , with the occasional wisp of breath at the edges. The whole outfit sounds poised, relaxed and beautifully modulated." debut recording from 1993 which launched him onto the British jazz scene. A jazz album
locked into the tradition but with eclectic influences such as Robert Fripp, McCoy Tyner,
Stan Getz, latin music and progressive rock. Features David Gordon on piano,
Rob Statham on fretless bass, and Ichiro Tatsuhara on drums. Guests include avant
guitarist Mark Wood, later to collaborate with Theo Travis in the cutting edge Marshall
Travis Wood improv' trio, and Cuban percussionist Robin Jones. "Like a modern day Duke, Travis takes delight in compositions which create subtly-constructed pictures of moods Sex ,Food and Money (pt2) with Travis' tenor churning through time-signatures over Mark Wood's other worldly guitar chords, is manic danger personified. Nightmare in New York" hits the same mood, with the tenor, lifted by Ichiro Tatsuhara's driving drums, digging in late Coltrane-ishly. The title track moodily captures the desolate loneliness of the small hours." Jazz the Magazine "Travis achieves an early morning spaciousness true to his title. This one earns an "A" for atmosphere" Cadence Magazine "2am highlights Travis' abilities as a player and composer with tunes like Fish and Nightmare in New York typical of his driving energy and capturing something of the excitement he generates live" Coventry Evening Telegraph |
