NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA OF SCOTLAND (NYJOS)
Website
The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS) draws young jazz musicians from throughout Scotland for its annual Summer Course (now in its seventh year).  A more recent innovation is the regular monthly Orchestral rehearsals held at Napier University, Edinburgh.  This development came about in direct response to a request from students in the orchestra who felt that their jazz skills were not developing at the same rate as their classical skills.  It also provided an opportunity for the Orchestra to extend the range of music in their repertoire and learn jazz theory in a structured and practical way.

Over the next 12 months the Orchestra will be working on music that encompasses all styles of jazz from Jelly Roll Morton and Count Basie through the era of bebop to more contemporary music from Carla Bley, Gil Evans and Julian Arguelles.  They are also looking to perform pieces written by young Scots musicians (including members of the Orchestra) and hopefully commission new works that reflect the strengths and interests of the students.
