MU-MCPS-PRS Drop-in Surgery
The first of this year's Musicians' Union/MCPS/PRS surgeries is being held in the MU's Glasgow office from 4.30pm until 6pm. Four 20 minute time slots are available, either to individuals or to bands and are free to MU and non-MU members.

RYAN'S CELLAR BAR - JAM SESSIONS
Ryan's Cellar Bar in Hope Street (just off the west end of Princes Street) in Edinburgh are running a jazz jam session every second Sunday of the month . Musicians are welcome to come along and sit in, and of course, the public are invited to come along and watch! The next ones are on Sunday 11th May and Sunday 25th May from 5pm to 8pm. Entry is free.

ISLE OF BUTE JAZZ FESTIVAL
This year’s Isle of Bute Jazz Festival runs from 1st to 5th May. The artists are: The Deep River Quartet from Holland, The Laurie Holloway Trio, Phil Mason’s New Orleans All Stars, Jazzin’ Babies from Norway, The Juggets Marching Band from Holland, Kit Carey’s Jazz Band, The Daniel Smith Blues Band, Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra, The Guinness All Stars form Ireland, Bobby Wishart, George Penman’s Jazz Band, Mike Whellans as well as a jazz parade, jam sessions, jazz cruises, Trefor “Fingers” Williams jazz party, a jazz picnic in the castle and jazz workshops.

PEEBLES JAZZ FESTIVAL
The 14th Peebles Jazz Festival takes place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th May. It features mainly traditional & dixieland jazz.

Bands appearing this year include: Millennium Eagle Jazz Band, Forth River Ragtimers, Dave Keir Hot Five, Jazz-a-Ward, George Penman’s Jazzmen, Alex Yellowlees Quartet and the Criterion Marching Band.

KIRKCUDBRIGHT JAZZ FESTIVAL

The 11th Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival takes place from the 12th to 15th June.  It is a celebration of Traditional New Orleans, Dixieland and Swing jazz in the picturesque harbour town in the South West of Scotland also known as “the artists’ town”.

The bands appearing this year are: Chicago Teddybears Society Jazzband, Dave Donohoe Band, Yorshire Stompers, Martin Bennett’s Old Green River Band, Papa Joe’s All Stars, Paul Munnery’s HARLEM, Sheila Fawkes & The Guys, The Red Stripe Band, The Millennium Eagle Jazz Band, Keith Stephen’s Hot Club Trio & Caroline Irwin, Bill Salmond’s Louisiana Ragtime Band, Dave Keir Hot Five, Sulwath Syncopators, Swing Guitars, Nathon Jones & the Half Notes, Reeds & Rhythm, Sweet & Hot and Tom Kincaid. There will also be a Brolly Parade with the Kirkcudbright All Stars Band, a Jazz Church Service and a Jazz Dine-a-round in local restaurants. Weekend tickets are just £40 (£36 if bought before and April) or individual concerts from £5.

GLASGOW JAZZ FESTIVAL
This year’s Glasgow Jazz Festival takes place from 20th to 29th June. Artists include: Lee Konitz Trio, Polar Bear, Neil Cowley Trio, Arnie Somogyi’s Ambul, Alan Benzie, Buddy Guy and Ian Shaw.

GORDON CRUICKSHANK
The mother of the late Gordon Cruickshank died recently and left a biggish bundle of personal writings, photographs and cassettes of Gordon's. There are 37 audio cassettes, not all jazz, press cuttings, photographs of Gordon with various bands and musicians, notebooks, programme notes for his radio broadcasts, scripts, a short story by him, miscellaneous notes and a Beethoven score for Symphony No.6. All can be collected from York. If you are interested in this please contact us and we’ll forward your details.

FIFE SUMMER JAZZ COURSE
Fife Summer Jazz Course runs from Monday 7th to Friday 11th July at St. Leonard’s School & Sixth Form College in St. Andrews. It is a practical course with the emphasis firmly on playing and singing. Course Director, Richard Michael is a passionate believer that “mistakes are cool” and invites people to come along and make mistakes as loudly & clearly as they want! Acitvities covered during the course include: individual instruction, theory, singing, composing & arranging, combo playing, big band and midi-sequencing.

CHARITY CD
Singer Grace Black has recorded a CD entitled “Someone to Watch Over Me”. 50% of the proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK. The CD is available for sale through the Jazz in Scotland website. Sound clips and further information is available at Grace’s website. She is also doing a charity concert at the Dunniker House Hotel, Kirkcaldy on Thursday 8th May at 7pm. Tickets are £10 (which includes a glass of champagne & a buffet) and are available from Grace on 01592 750 625. Proceeds go to Cancer Research UK Relay for Life.

LOCHWINNOCH JAZZ
The Cucina Minucci at The Junction, High Street, Lochwinnoch is a family run coffee shop, deli and bakery. It has been hosting successful jazz concerts for nearly a year. The next concert is on Thursday 29th May and features Richard Mulhearn & friends. There is a special concert in June featuring Richard and various guests to celebrate 1 year of successful events.

MU TEACHERS CONFERENCE
The Musicians’ Union is organising its first conference dedicated solely to the needs and interests of its instrumental teacher members. This event, to be held at the Peterborough Marriott Hotel, will be a superb opportunity for MU members who teach to hear from experts in the profession, discuss the vital issues which affect teachers' working lives and to share best practice, as well as to network with colleagues from across the UK. There are 100 places available for members at a cost of £49 each. This specially discounted price includes not only the two day conference, but also accommodation and meals. Application forms are downloadable now from the MU website. The closing date for applications is 30th June 2008.

American trumpeter Duke Heitger performs at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath with Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra on Saturday 17th May. American pianist Jeff Barnhart is appearing in the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival on Friday the 30th. He also plays at the Linlithgow Jazz Club with the West End Jazz band on Saturday 31st. The Linlithgow Jazz Club also hosts The Red Hot Reedwarmers from France on Saturday 10th May. Martin Taylor & Alison Burns perform at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh on Friday 30th & City Halls in Glasgow on Saturday 31st.
