National Jazz Institute of Scotland The National Jazz Institute announce a New Jazz Tutor's Course: Summer 1999
The National Jazz Institute at the University of Strathclyde University invite applications from experienced musicians and teachers to join Scotlands first Jazz Tutors Course based at the Jordanhill Campus, supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The Jazz Tutors Course:
The course is designed for experienced musicians who have an interest in jazz and improvisation and who wish to develop their musical skills and new skills and abilities related to setting up and running jazz ensembles. The purpose of the course is to equip these musicians to develop jazz activities in their own communities. As an associate tutor of the NJI they will receive continuous support in the field and through distance learning. The course will be delivered by the best jazz educators in Scotland, led by Bobby Wishart.
The musicians on the course will experience:
* an initial 3 day residential course at NJI during Summer 1999
* follow up visits to their areas by NJI tutors
* the process of setting up a jazz ensemble in their communities
* support by distance learning
* a recall 3 day residential course at NJI during Summer 2000
The classes which will be followed during the course are:
* The Art of Improvisation including: study of the elements of the art, development of skills and techniques, performance in a variety of contexts
* Jazz Keyboard as the Heart of the Ensemble including: development and creation of accompaniment skills in harmonising, reharmonisng and interpretation, keyboard performing in a variety of styles
* Ensemble : playing, directing and repertoire including: performing in various ensembles, study of the role of instrumentation, arranging, leading and directing
* Setting up an Ensemble including: identifying resources, space and people; applying for grant support; financial and artistic management; group interaction and leading techniques.
